Bodywork: Shamanic Healing

Picture

We are beings of luminous energy
in an ocean of infinite power. Every cell
in our bodies hums with this force
and our minds sing with its creative force.
Shamanic healing directly harnesses
this power to heal, to awaken, and to change
our reality. With breath, energy work,
sound, movement, trance and ceremony,
we can transform wounds, habits, reactions
and beliefs stored in the body, and set
ourselves free to create extraordinary lives.
We can experience in our own bodies  that we have never been separate,
unsupported, broken or alone . . . that we are truly free and absolutely loved.

Shamanic healing can bring amazing experiences: in the years I have walked this path with elders from many traditions, I have experienced incredible physical healings, profound visions, miracles, breathtaking synchronicities, and awesome spirits. I have experienced people coming home to their hearts, their bodies, and their worlds. I have heard them laugh with delight and cry with joy when they experienced the truth of their being, and began living that truth in the world.

As we cultivate a shamanic way of being, we begin to experience everything in our world as alive, conscious, and connected in the deepest ways. We begin to recognize the blessings offered by every being and circumstance, and we feel so grateful that we begin to share everything we are with the world. Our life becomes an expression of gratitude and generosity.

This is the greatest satisfaction: to experience a deep and profound peace with oneself and one's life, not as the struggling, suffering character in a tragic story that we once believed ourselves to be -- but as a miraculous and utterly unique expression of the creative force of life: a true human being.

The Shamanic Journey of the Human Being

Shamanism is a way being in the world, a part of the world, receiving our life from the world and giving it back again. Shamanism is not a technique, and requires no feathers, drums or rattles. Shamanism is not "indian." On the shamanic path, we do not become shamans: we become fully human. We become indigenous again: we belong to everything, and we come home to our world, bearing our gift to the world: a life fully lived.

The shamanic journey is a journey from feeling, to knowledge, to love. It is the journey to wholeness.

In the beginning, we are ruled by feelings. We were each born with a deep experience of connection to the life that flows through all things, though we could not yet reflect that experience in thoughts or words. We are completely absorbed in the experience of our bodies: tuners of incredible precision, designed to channel the infinite creative power of life into specific feelings.

As we learn, we are ruled by knowledge. Our minds are designed to harness the emotional energy generated by the body for the most dazzling act of power: the creation of an entire universe. As other minds around us hook our attention, they fill our own minds with symbols, the building blocks of our own private universe. Each one of us perceives the world around us, reshapes that world according to our own point of view, and projects our reality out into the world through our words and actions. We literally remake the world. This magical creative power is both our gift and, for many of us, our prison. Before we could even speak, we are taught to narrow and harden our attention, shut down our feelings, believe our thoughts, and suppress the authentic organic wisdom of the body. Our lives became heavy, rigid, contracted and fearful, and we lost the ability to perceive ourselves, each other, and our world as we truly are.

On the shamanic path we surrender our lives to love. We learn to harness our feelings and our knowledge in the service of our heart, and we become whole. We heal the wounded mind and the energetic patterns that support its tyranny, grounding ourselves in the power and love of our bodies and our relationships with the world. "Recapitulation," or "Journeying" techniques use the imagination itself to reveal our wounds and generate new possibilities in our consciousness. "Dreaming" or "Deep Presence" Techniques re-access and reactivate the deep feeling wisdom of the body, tapping into its extraordinary ability to harness the creative and healing power of life itself. All of these practices use breath, gentle touch, energy work, sound, song, movement, trance and ceremony to reawaken our experience of being fully human, fully alive, and fully empowered. We become whole.
